6-7-15 Effort to stay open in Texas

They are trying a new effort to stay open in Texas.  We were designed for lower water use and native areas to keep costs down.

The USGA article gives you and idea of what older courses are trying to do to stay open.

I hope it works for them.  Native areas are not as cheap as people would believe.  You reduce weekly mowing, fertilization and water.  But each year I still apply weed control.  This year I have added insect control to try to reduce tick populations.  We are also in a constant state of mowing trying to keep it short enough to play from but by doing that you lose the intended look of the grass seed heads that distinguishes it from the cut rough and visually frames the hole.

Mark exactly we are working on our areas now! It has to be done to clean out the weeds and decrease the potential tick issue!

  2. Well said! I’m trying to clean up our areas in the near future. I have to cut them first so I can get in there to spray them. Very time consuming and costly, but I believe it is a best management practice to make an attempt.
